北宋贾善翔《犹龙传》卷五云：明皇开元三年（715）教天下置开元观……衢州建观穿地得一鱼，可长三尺，其状似铁，微带紫碧色……叩之甚响，其鱼亦不能名，遣使进贡……帝乃呼为瑞鱼芬，仍令悬于太微宫，非讲经设斋不得击之。于是诸宫观竞以木石模之，以代集众。（三家本《道藏》）南宋谢守颧《混元圣纪》卷八所记略同，末云：宫观有木鱼自兹始也。
